A Message from the William E. Cottle Elementary School- The Cottle Weekly
May 1, 2026
Dear Cottle Family,
As we welcome the month of May, we look forward to the arrival of warmer, sunnier days to match the energy and excitement building here at Cottle. This is always a busy and rewarding time of year, filled with meaningful learning experiences and schoolwide events that celebrate the growth of our students.
Next week, our students will complete the New York State Mathematics assessments. These exams will be administered in a fully computer-based format, with students using their Chromebooks. The assessments provide valuable insight into each child’s academic progress, and we encourage all students to approach them with confidence and to do their very best.
I would also like to commend our young mathematicians—and their dedicated teachers—for their focus, perseverance, and hard work throughout the year. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, and I am incredibly proud of each and every one of our Cottle Cubs.
It is remarkable to realize that only two months remain in the school year. As I reflect on where we began in September, I am truly impressed by the growth and achievements of our students. Their progress speaks to the strength of the partnership between home and school. Thank you for your continued support, positivity, and dedication to our community.
I am also equally grateful to our dedicated faculty and staff, whose daily efforts and passion for teaching and learning make a lasting impact on our students. Their commitment to continuous growth and excellence is deeply appreciated.
Finally, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to our exceptional PTA and the many dedicated parent volunteers who generously contribute their time, energy, and talents in support of our school community. Your unwavering commitment to organizing and enhancing the experiences that make W.E. Cottle such a special place for our students and families is truly commendable. The care and thoughtfulness you bring to each event and initiative do not go unnoticed, and I am sincerely grateful for all that you do to enrich our school.
This month, our school focused on the theme “Make a Difference.” Students learned how even small actions can show responsibility and care for others. Through our read-aloud I Am One, we explored how one small voice or kind act can spark meaningful change.
Throughout the month, students practiced making a difference in simple, everyday ways, like helping a friend, cleaning up their space, or lending a hand in the classroom. We are so proud of their efforts! Each class also celebrated students who demonstrated these positive actions with PAW Awards, and their photos were added to our PAW of Fame.
Next month, our theme will be “Respecting Our World.” Students will learn about caring for the environment, their community, and one another. In our read-aloud The Tree Lady, we’ll see how one person’s dedication can bring beauty and positive change to an entire community. We encourage you to talk with your child about ways they can help make a difference at school and at home as we work together to make the world a better place.
SEPTA EVENTS AT A GLANCE
- 5/6(Wed), Raise a Glass, Raise a Grant
Raise a Glass, Raise a Grant Please join us on May 6 at 6:00 PM at Jack’s Bar and Restaurant for a meaningful evening with Tuckahoe SEPTA: “Raise a Glass, Raise a Grant.” This event is all about supporting the dedicated teachers who go above and beyond every day—especially those working with special education students. Meeting the wide range of learning styles and needs in special education classrooms often requires additional tools, adaptive materials, and innovative approaches that aren’t always covered by standard budgets. Teacher grants help bridge that gap, giving educators the flexibility to provide more personalized and effective support for their students. By expanding access to grants, we can help create more inclusive, engaging learning environments where every student has the opportunity to grow and succeed. Your support directly impacts the students who need it most. Come raise a glass with us and help invest in our teachers, our classrooms, and our community. I hope to see you there and stop by and say hello.
